Virgo is the sign connected to the circulating energy of the earth element. In AstroYoga, earth represents manifest reality, embodiment, and the organization of the physical world. Virgo teaches us that the right use of the mind and body lies in our capacity to organize, refine, and arrange life to be as we wish it to be.
Virgo is ruled by Mercury and is also the sign of Mercury’s exaltation. In astrology, Mercury represents the mind, communication, and the ability to direct thoughts into actions. Virgo energy helps you to hone your mental powers by sorting out your thoughts and communications to direct energy toward what matters and release old thought patterns that are no longer applicable to who you are today.
This Virgo season contains the final days of Mercury retrograde, Pluto retrograde re-entering Capricorn, the beginning of Uranus retrograde, and also the start of eclipse season.
While Virgo is a sign that likes to be in control, this month’s astrology is bound to bring some surprises and the resurgence of old themes. Luckily, Virgo energy shines best when you let go of external control, instead concentrating on controlling your reactions and attitudes toward the twists and turns of life.
In astrology, Virgo is associated with the digestive system, especially the intestine. The intestine connects to your ability to assimilate experiences and food, as well as sort out what is not useful to you and remove the waste.
The intestine is where you process and absorb experiences and food, and it has a direct connection to your brain. While modern medicine is just now beginning to understand the gut-brain connection, yoga and astrology have explored this interconnected relationship between the Virgo intestines and the mind for a long time.
Virgo is linked to the throat chakra. The throat chakra is energetically where you clarify thought, communication, and self-expression. It’s a key center for the expression of love and also protection, as well as a key center in turning thoughts into reality.
The Virgo-associated throat chakra and intestines can help you to follow your ‘gut’ instinct as well as clarify your words and communications to help you organize your life to bring your desires into reality.
During Virgo season, take extra care of these areas. It’s advisable to practice postures that aid in digestion, such as twists or forward bends. I suggest practicing these with the Oko Living Yin Yang yoga rug to connect to the adaptable, yet measured approach Virgo energy has to offer.
As you move through Virgo season, give yourself permission to refine your life through paying attention to detail, and modifying your thoughts and communications on any matter that you’d like to shift. Embrace envisioning a life that is steady, where (while you can’t control what happens), you’re able to positively step forward in any circumstance. Give yourself time and grace as you digest the myriad experiences of your life, and allow yourself to step forward with mental clarity and ease.
