Cancer is the sign connected to the self-directed energy of the water element. In AstroYoga, water represents emotion and the fluidity of the seemingly solid world.
Cancer teaches that although the external world may appear rigid in any given situation, the true nature of reality is fluid. This fluid reality adapts to your energy as you select your emotions and focus on what you truly care about.
Cancer is ruled by the Moon. In astrology, the Moon represents the energetic portal that brings reality into manifestation. Before any form exists in your life, whether it’s a yoga pose or a new job or a relationship, it exists first as an idea or a seed-energy that prepares to sprout. In astrology, this is represented by the moon.
This gives a big clue to AstroYoga practitioners that this season is a time when you can begin to select the experiences you’d like to have before they emerge in your everyday reality. You can select to feel the great emotions of success and wellbeing, even when things haven’t quite fallen into place.
This particular Cancer season has a lot of good fortune coming your way. First, we have a blue moon this season, with Cancer both beginning and ending with a full moon in Capricorn. Additionally, this is the month when Venus, the planet of love, beauty, and wealth, becomes visible as the evening star, which is her most auspicious form.
This Cancer season can help you abide in a state of love and beauty which will plant seeds that sprout more love and beauty in the world for both yourself and others.
In astrology, Cancer is associated with the chest, ribcage, and stomach. These physical attributes connect to your capacity to nurture, nourish, care, and protect.
The chest is the area we give from (think of a nursing mother or giving from the heart), while the rib cage protects our vital organs, and the stomach receives nourishment. In order for your Cancerian energy to be flowing, each of these qualities needs to be in balance. This means giving, receiving, and protecting in right measure. During Cancer season you’re invited to be discerning with how you’d like to feel in a given situation–does a certain person or event call for nurturing others, nourishing yourself, or a dose of protection?
Cancer is associated with the third-eye chakra. The third-eye chakra is connected to ideas of having a higher vision of reality, and in its association with Cancer, it represents the sub-conscious aspects of life falling into harmony with your highest vision and intention.
During Cancer season, you may find that these areas require extra attention. Yoga poses that open or strengthen the chest, such as plank or bridge, can be particularly beneficial. I suggest practicing these with your Oko Living Indigo Moon Yoga Mat to bring in the water element.
As you move through Cancer season, give yourself permission to feel how you want to feel without needing external validation as to why. Embrace envisioning good things for yourself. Ask yourself what life would be like if your inner state could influence everyone you met, and then give the gift of yourself to the world.
