Aries is the ram, the first sign of the zodiac, associated with the beginning of a new cycle. At the equinox, Pisces dissolves the old cycle, and Aries initiates the new. Where Pisces moves through the fluid nature of existence, Aries defines direction within it. This transition marks the moment where potential shifts into definite action.
Fire in the zodiac connects to spirit, activation, and the firing of neural networks in the body. As the cardinal fire sign, Aries represents the spark that sets things in motion, the point at which vision meets action.
When Aries energy is strong, the body may feel activated, energized, and ready to move forward. You may sense what is aligned with your vision for life, and be inspired to take action toward that. At times, this can also manifest as restlessness or impulsivity. With Aries, the key is to direct energy with clarity and precision.
Aries rules the head, face, and upper brain. These are areas of the body responsible for perception, vision, and direction. The head is where awareness meets the world. It organizes information, determines focus, and initiates movement through the nervous system.
When Aries energy is supported, action is clear, direct, and aligned with your sense of self. When it is unsupported, it can lead to tension, overexertion, or scattered effort. The following five practices are designed to support these Aries functions: vision, brain function, direction, and embodied will.
Warrior II refines Aries energy into direction. Extend your arms wide and fix your gaze over your front fingertips. This steady gaze, or drishti, is essential. Aries energy requires focus, and holding Warrior II with sustained vision can help the eyes, nervous system, and body align toward a single focal point.
From Warrior III, reach your torso alongside the front leg, bringing your torso down and your arms behind your back. Hold steadiness in the muscles of the legs. From this steady base, allow your head to relax and invite the scalp and brows to soften any tension.
Kneel on the ground and place your head on the ground, near your knees. Place your hands on your heels and lift your bottom, curling the spine and back body as you go. Stay and breathe.
Rabbit pose rounds the spine and brings compression into the head and neck. This posture opens the fascia network of the backbody, from head to feet, particularly lengthening the area around the kidneys and adrenal glands, associated with Aries’ opposite sign Libra.
Aries governs the head, the origin point of perception and direction. Headstand reverses your relationship to gravity, bringing awareness and blood flow directly into the Aries-ruled region of the body. This posture increases circulation to the head and heightens focus.
Rather than approaching this pose with force, enter it with control and steadiness. Allow the spine to lengthen upward as the body stabilizes. Note: this posture isn’t always appropriate for a given practice. Check in with your neck/spinal strength and blood pressure before practicing.
Tarasana returns here as a bridge between Pisces and Aries, particularly potent in the weeks surrounding the equinox. Sit with the soles of your feet touching and your knees wide. Curl your spine and bring your forehead toward the soles of your feet. This posture connects the Aries-ruled head to the Pisces-ruled feet, creating a closed energetic loop. The areas where the energy field extends or loses energy are sealed (fronts of chakras, palms of hands, soles of feet, root, and crown), and the back chakras, where you receive energy, are open, particularly the back space of the heart. Remain here and allow the system to reorganize and restore.
Aries marks the beginning of the zodiac, but every beginning emerges from what came before it. This is a season of directed action and honing your vision for life. When actions are concentrated through the lens of your personal vision, they take on greater force, aligning your personal will with the cosmos itself.
