Leo is the lion, the fifth sign of the zodiac, associated with the heart, the spine, and the experience of living fully from one’s vital life force. Where Cancer protects life as it develops, Leo gives that life expression. The protected seed becomes a living being, creatively experiencing life as it is now. What was held hidden within begins to radiate outward.
Fire in the zodiac connects to spirit, vitality, and conscious awareness. As the fixed fire sign ruled by the Sun, Leo represents the steady flame of the heart, the inner star that illuminates experience and holds the vital essence of an individual's life, as well as the connection of the individual to the collective.
Intellectual and emotional knowing is not enough; Leo teaches that true knowledge comes from direct experiential awareness. The heart is where your higher self abides in a state of experiential knowing, and communicates that to you through glimmers of radiant joy, love, or the undeniable impulse to follow your heart’s true path.
When Leo energy is strong, you may feel creative, generous, courageous, and deeply connected to the joy of your life’s purpose. At times, this same energy can show the shadow qualities of pride, rigidity, prizing external validation over authenticity, or disconnection from the quiet wisdom of the heart.
With Leo, the invitation is to release pressure to show up as others want to see you, living from the heart’s direct knowing and the creativity bubbling up from within.
Leo rules the heart, spine, and upper back. The heart sustains physical life through circulation, but it also serves as a profound center of perception. In AstroYoga, the heart represents experiential knowledge, the wisdom that goes beyond what words can describe.
The spine provides the structural support through which this knowing is communicated through the body. Within yogic anatomy, the spine is the physical center closest to Shushumna Nadi, the subtle-body central channel through which consciousness unifies and ascends.
Just above and behind the physical heart in the spine lies the cardiac ganglia, an intricate communication center linking the heart and nervous system. Rather than functioning as separate systems, the heart and brain continually inform one another, shaping perception, emotion, and response.
When Leo energy is supported, you may feel courageous, wholehearted, creative, and deeply aligned with your inner purpose. When unsupported, you may experience upper back tension, rigidity or weakness around the spine, difficulty trusting your heart, or the tendency to hold external validation in higher esteem than your own inner voice.
The following five practices are designed to support Leo energy through heart opening, spinal vitality, courage, and embodied awareness.
The following five practices are designed to support Leo energy so you find grounding, inner connection, beauty, and inner power.
The breath is one of the simplest ways to connect the heart, spine, and nervous system. Sit or stand with your spine long and your chest broad. Engage your pelvic floor and low belly muscles gently toward the spine, like you’re supporting your organs.
Slightly constrict the back of the throat while breathing slowly through the nose (the same throat feeling as if you were going to fog a mirror). This creates a soft sound. Breathe like this for several rounds, and consider continuing your ujjayi practice as you move through the various postures of this sequence.
Cat-Cow ties the breath to spinal movement to clear stagnation and promote positive spinal flow. From hands and knees, inhale to drop the chest and belly toward the earth, arching the spine into cow pose. As you exhale, press the heart and upper back toward the sky, curling the spine into cat pose. Repeat several times. Try moving slowly and work to deepen your breath as you consciously notice each spinal vertebra.
Leo asks us to express what lives within. Kneel comfortably and place the hands on the knees. Inhale deeply through the nose. Exhale through the mouth with the tongue extended, the eyes wide, and the jaw fully released. Try to make an audible roar of release, joy, or any authentic expression of your inner self. Lion Pose softens the accumulated tension through the jaw, face, throat, and chest. Practice several rounds, noticing how you feel after each exhalation.
Tiger pose explores the relationship between spinal movement and the opposite sides of the body. From hands and knees, extend one leg behind you, bend the knee, and reach back with the opposite arm to grab the foot. Once holding the foot, energetically kick your leg back and up, lifting your toes skyward. Practice both sides.
This posture strengthens and mobilizes the spine while expanding the heart. Lie on your back and bend your knees with your feet planted on the ground. Begin by lifting to bridge pose, with the hips to the sky. You can choose to stay here or add the arms by placing the hands alongside the ears and pressing up, extending your elbows. Press your belly to the sky. The spine is the central channel of the body, and this posture activates it. Remain steady and breathe deeply. After releasing the pose, pause a moment and take a slow spinal twist to allow the spine to settle.
Leo teaches that life is best lived from the heart’s authentic self-expression. The heart knows what the mind alone cannot. The spine carries this knowledge throughout the body, allowing consciousness to become lived experience rather than abstract understanding.
This is a season of leading from the heart, standing tall in your truth, and allowing your inner light to illuminate your path. When aligned, Leo energy brings courage, generosity, creativity, a heart-connected relationship to life itself, and the willingness to live from direct experience. The brightest light can be found hidden in the interior space of the heart.
